Business overdraft interest in Malaysia is commonly calculated on the amount actually used each day, rather than the full approved limit. For a simple estimate, multiply each day's outstanding balance by the annual interest rate, divide by the bank's applicable day-count basis, and add the daily amounts. Rates, fees and calculation rules depend on your facility agreement.
01. How does business overdraft interest work in Malaysia?
An overdraft gives an eligible business access to a revolving credit limit, while interest typically tracks the outstanding funds drawn under that facility.
Suppose a business has an approved overdraft limit of RM150,000 but draws only RM80,000. The interest calculation generally starts with the amount actually outstanding, not RM150,000. If the business later receives customer payments and reduces the overdraft, subsequent daily interest can fall.
Malaysia's Alliance Bank SME financing information describes an overdraft as a revolving facility for working capital. Its published fees also illustrate why businesses should review the individual facility terms instead of assuming that interest is the only cost.

How long each outstanding balance remains in place.
02. What is the daily overdraft interest formula?
The simplified daily calculation takes the utilised balance, multiplies it by the annual rate expressed as a decimal, then divides by the applicable number of days in the year.
- Record the balance for each day. A customer payment may reduce the overdraft during the month.
- Use the applicable annual rate. For example, 7.5% p.a. means 0.075 in the calculation. This is an assumption, not a published current offer.
- Calculate and add the daily interest. If both utilisation and rate stay unchanged for several days, multiply that day's amount by the number of days.
For a floating-rate facility, split the calculation again when the rate changes. This simple formula excludes interest capitalisation, fees and other bank-specific adjustments.
03. Worked example: How much interest on an RM150,000 limit?
For a hypothetical 30-day month, assume an overdraft limit of RM150,000, an unchanged illustrative annual rate of 7.5%, and three different utilisation levels. The principal is not charged at the maximum limit throughout the month.
| Period | Balance used | Days | Interest at 7.5% p.a. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Days 1–10 | RM80,000 | 10 | RM164.38 |
| Days 11–22 | RM50,000 | 12 | RM123.29 |
| Days 23–30 | RM20,000 | 8 | RM32.88 |
| Total estimated interest | — | 30 | RM320.55 |

Calculation: (RM80,000 × 7.5% × 10 ÷ 365) + (RM50,000 × 7.5% × 12 ÷ 365) + (RM20,000 × 7.5% × 8 ÷ 365) = RM320.55, rounded once at the end.
What this tells the owner: Lowering the utilised balance earlier in the month can reduce the interest on later days. This example is for understanding the calculation; it does not include bank charges and is not an interest quote.
04. Estimate your overdraft interest for one period

RM 16.44 per day, assuming a 365-day basis. Excludes fees.
This tool assumes a constant annual rate and balance for the number of days entered. It uses a 365-day denominator and excludes fees, compounding and changes in interest rates. Your bank's actual statement may differ.
05. What other overdraft costs should an SME check?
Daily interest is only one part of an overdraft's total cost. Depending on the bank and agreement, charges may include fees on unused limits, account or service fees, stamp duty, excess-utilisation charges, or extra interest on unpaid amounts.
- Commitment fee: Some facilities charge a fee on the unused portion of a credit line. Alliance Bank's published fee schedule gives a bank-specific example and associated conditions. Do not assume the same fee or threshold applies to every overdraft.
- Rate changes: A floating or variable interest rate may change during the facility's life. Bank Negara Malaysia explains how monetary policy influences wider lending rates, but that does not determine any one SME's contracted overdraft rate.
- Excess and late charges: Using more than the approved limit, missing payments or allowing interest to remain unpaid may trigger additional costs under the facility's terms.
- Review and security terms: Banks may review, reduce or recall facilities. Security, guarantor and renewal arrangements vary by product and lender.
06. What should your SME check before using an overdraft?
A revolving overdraft can help bridge a temporary cash timing gap, but using it continuously to fund recurring losses may increase financial pressure. Review the numbers before focusing only on interest cost.
Define the gap. What exact payments must be covered, and when?
Verify collections. Which receivables are realistically expected, and when?
Estimate daily usage. Model the maximum balance and how it will reduce.
Budget all costs. Include possible fees and changes in floating rates.
Stress-test delays. What happens if key customers pay 15–30 days late?
Review alternatives. Could better collections, stock planning or financing structure reduce the gap?
If your business repeatedly needs the full facility limit, investigate whether slow collections, inventory buildup, expenses or insufficient margins are behind the pattern. For a broader financing-structure discussion, read BizQuest's existing Term Loan vs Overdraft Malaysia guide; that article covers a different question from the interest calculation here.
07. How can BizQuest help you evaluate financing readiness?
BizQuest Advisory helps Malaysian SME owners understand cash flow, working capital needs and financing readiness before making borrowing decisions. The objective is not simply to access more capital, but to understand the financial purpose and whether the business can manage the resulting obligations.
For example, BizQuest's Working Capital & Business Sustainability Analysis helps business owners review financial figures such as receivables, payables, inventory and operating expenses. It is a financial review tool, not an overdraft interest quotation.
Businesses can also explore business financing consultation to discuss funding purpose and readiness. Any financing approval, pricing or terms depend on the bank's own assessment and applicable documentation.
Frequently asked questions
Is business overdraft interest calculated on the full approved limit?
Interest is generally calculated on the overdraft balance actually used, not automatically on the full approved limit. However, some facilities may separately charge fees on the unused limit. Always check your bank's terms.
How do I calculate overdraft interest for 30 days?
When the balance and rate stay unchanged, an illustrative formula is: outstanding balance × annual interest rate × 30 ÷ 365. If the balance changes during the month, calculate each period separately and add the results. The bank's day-count method and fees may differ.
Does reducing my overdraft balance reduce interest?
Generally, yes. Under a daily-outstanding-balance method, reducing the amount used lowers the basis for interest on subsequent days. Exact cut-off times, posting dates and terms depend on the bank.
Are overdraft rates and fees the same across Malaysian banks?
No. Pricing, fees, security requirements, review arrangements and day-count conventions can differ by institution and facility. Compare the latest product disclosure sheet, letter of offer and applicable bank fee schedule.
Does BizQuest provide an overdraft or guarantee approval?
BizQuest focuses on SME financing strategy, working capital analysis and financing readiness rather than directly providing an overdraft facility. Approval and terms are determined by the bank and depend on eligibility, documentation and credit assessment.
